Research Postgraduate Programmes

Hong Kong's universities offer a wide range of research postgraduate programmes in both science and humanities subject areas. Students are encouraged to conduct research under the guidance and supervision of world-class scholars in a liberal environment. The continuous support of the government and other organisations enables students to enjoy learning and development in advanced teaching and research facilities. Hong Kong's dynamic research culture continuous to attract young researchers to come here to study.

Research postgraduate programmes require students to focus mainly on their research work, but there may also be some taught components. At the end of their studies, students are required to submit theses/dissertations based on their research, and an oral defence of their work will be conducted in front of an examination panel.

Based on the required level of depth and breadth in the research subject, students are admitted into Master and doctoral programmes. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are the two main types of degrees awarded for research postgraduate studies.
