From its inception, HKUST has promoted the establishment of multi-disciplinary research institutes as one of its key strategies for fulfilling that element of the HKUST charter dealing with "assisting in the economic and social development of Hong Kong". In general, HKUST has benefitted from the establishment of these research institutes in the following aspects:

The University campus occupies a 60-hectare (150-acre) site of sweeping natural beauty on the Clear Water Bay peninsula in East Kowloon, less than 30 minutes' driving time from central Hong Kong. Construction began in 1989, and the first phase was completed in 1991, providing accommodation for 2,000 students. The second phase was completed in early 1993, increasing accommodation to 7,000 students.

In addition to classrooms, laboratories and other academic facilities, the campus includes student housing and faculty apartments, as well as athletic and recreational facilities. Studios, workshops, music rooms, television and games rooms, meeting rooms, common rooms and office space for student societies are all part of the main academic complex. Athletic facilities include a multi-purpose sports hall, an athletic field with all-weather turf, modern running tracks, playing fields, tennis courts, squash courts, an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool and an indoor swimming pool. A full range of campus services, including restaurants, a bookstore, visitor lodgings and banks, are also offered.
